i was going to write a blog post about how "i lied about taking a break from library books" as i did go and get another (albeit short) one, however upon looking up the views of the author on genAI, i stumbled upon various unsavory allegations against him... so i guess i won't be writing about him or that book.
instead i'd like to share some recent bandcamp finds c: though the first one that started the rabbit hole i did initially find via youtube recommendations
Parson Hex describes their music on bandcamp🡥 as "darkslime sillywave for the clowns and freaks and nightmare ghosts" and i love that. as much as i hate to draw comparisons (or maybe it's not that i hate to, but that i feel like i'm bad at them), it's like if Peter Murphy and Jack Stauber had a lil baby. it's slightly less silly than Jack Stauber and a decent amount less gothic than Peter Murphy, but the way each of those things draws eachother back isn't such a bad thing. i think the balance is nice and appreciate that it is its own thing, and i felt a bit surprised when i found myself giving it multiple listens. so far the only other release of theirs i've checked out is the 2025 release "Staring Out Windows", which proved to be just as eclecticly good. i got distracted with the artists that appear in the "If you like Parson Hex, you may also like:" that appears at the bottom of the page before i got through more of the PH discography.
this is often how i end up in music rabbit holes: the "recommended" sections of bandcamp and youtube are doing their job. the particular one that caught my attention was an album with artwork that appeared to be drawn by a 6 year old - and sure enough, it was. Leo Lackritz🡥 was 6 years old when the album was released to bandcamp in 2023. i find myself questioning whether the blurb included by Leo on the album page (preceding a lengthier note from his father) is a bit too eloquent for his age, but ultimately want to give them the benefit of the doubt. my favorites are Predicament and KB Disco. i don't know much about GarageBand and how much comes included with it, be it instrument packs or entire samples, so i don't fully know the extent of Leo's talent other than that he claims to have produced the album entirely on his own, but i do wonder what he's up to now in 2026 not having put out any other music to that bandcamp account.
i find the ideas of children to be inspiring. even the more asinine ones. now, i wish i could remember where i heard about them, as i'm sure it was a well of content, but Poo Thousand🡥 is another child music project that makes me happy that the internet exists. they have two 8 track releases, consisting of rambunctious yelling (about poops and farts) and wailing on instruments. i don't think it's about whether it has substance, but whether you can tolerate such an unbridled cacaphony. reminds me of when i got gifted my first instrument, a travel-size acoustic guitar and had no idea how to play it. strumming frantically, my parents' friend who was over at the time gave me some kind of look and said i needed lessons. which sure, i didn't know what i was doing, but how can you expect a kid to pick up the guitar and know how to play it without any prior knowledge? i'm just happy they sound like they're having fun.
this leads me to the next stretch of the rabbit hole... a curious link was left in the text section below the first Poo Thousand album, www.boatdreamsfromthehill.com🡥 (along with a gmail with the same name for fanmail, which i found interesting). now, at first i wasn't sure who was running this site and what their relation to Poo Thousand was, but after a quick search of the archives i found out the band consists of "my nephews and me", the me presumably being the webmaster of the site. it seems to get sporadic updates, with the last one currently being in 2023, and their Releases page boasts a huge amount of stuff. i think navigating to the Links page makes things a bit easier to digest at a glance, and mostly holds links to bandcamp pages from bands located in Vancouver. there's a few non-band links thrown in there, including this one titled "The Funniest Thing on the Internet🡥. oh, and i also found a Poo Thousand music video in the archive, so you can get a sense of what they're about if you didn't follow the link from before.
i have a lot of bands to check out with thanks to BDFTH. the only ones i checked out so far were Pink Band🡥, another child band whom i wish i could also add their releases to my collection (but they are comically priced at $900-$1,000 a pop), and Eine Kleine China🡥 - whose most recent 2023 release was recorded at the Palomino in Calgary. which brings me to where i'll end the rabbit hole with a band i saw at the same venue in 2023, The Velveteins🡥 - and while i don't typically listen to as much indie rock these days as i used to, their sound still holds a lot of nostalgia for me, for times i spent listening to them with my bestie after discovering them while looking up bands that were playing in his city while i was visiting him.
and now i depart from writing this so i can put my full attention on checking out more of the bands and albums in this rabbit hole, and beyond.
